WACO — Two 18 wheelers crashed on Interstate 35 near Waco Wednesday night, Oct. 17, 2012, killing the driver of one semi truck when it burst into flames.
The big rig accident happened about 10:30 p.m. on 10-17-12 on northbound I-35 near the Tours Road exit at Elm Mott. One 18 wheeler slowed down due to a closed lane in a construction zone, and a truck behind it didn’t slow down in time and rear-ended it.
The second truck erupted in flames and the driver died at the scene. The driver of the first truck was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco with injuries which reportedly were not life-threatening.
The ensuing fire damaged the roadway beneath and the road surface had to be re-surfaced. The highway was closed until late Thursday morning, Oct. 18, 2012.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said a member of the construction crew tried to free the driver trapped in the burning second 18 wheeler, but was unable to do so and burned his hands. It also appeared the driver already may have been dead.
