Crane-Truck Crash Fatal in Texas Eagle Ford

JOURDANTON — Domingo Mendoza, 60, of Alice died in a two-vehicle crane-truck crash on FM 140 near Jourdanton, which is south of San Antonio, late Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 3, 2012. The crash later was attributed in part to heavier traffic in the Texas Eagle Ford Shale play.

Texas Department of Public Safety officers said Mendoza was driving a crane westbound on FM 140 around 5 p.m. on 10-3-12 when he failed to yield right of way and collided with a truck which was crossing the highway. The truck, which was hauling a large trailer, was going north on Highway 16 and was driven by Jerry White, 21.

White was injured, but Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident in Atascosa County. White was taken to South Texas Regional Hospital and was in fair condition.

The crane was hit on the driver’s side. The truck flipped over. Traffic was delayed for many hours while the site was cleared.

The DPS considers the accident related to the surge of traffic caused by Eagle Ford Shale drilling in the region. Among drilling centers is Tilden, just south of the accident site. The DPS said both highways in the accident scene have been “extremely busy with Eagle Ford Shale.”
